How does a planet differ from a star?


Ans. 
Stars Planets
Stars emit a large amount of heat and light. They do not have heat and light of their own. They only reflect the light of the sun.
They are big heavenly bodies. Planets are called ‘Wanderers’ because they revolve around the sun in their fixed orbits.
There are many stars that we cannot see with our naked eyes. Planets can be seen with the help of the telescope.


(b) What is meant by the ‘Solar System’?

Ans.The celestial bodies consisting of the Sun, its planets, satellites, asteroids, meteoroids, and dust particles from the Solar System.

(b) Name all the planets according to their distance from the sun.


Ans.The planets according to their distance from the sun are:
  • Mercury
  • Venus
  • Earth
  • Mars
  • Jupiter
  • Saturn
  • Uranus
  • Neptune
  • Pluto

(b) Why is the Earth palled a unique planet?

Ans.
  • Only the Earth has conditions favourable for life in the form of animals and plants.
  • It has favourable/suitable temperature for life. It is neither too hot nor too cold.
  • Its surface has water. No other planet of the Solar System has water, essential for the survival of plants and animals.
  • Life-giving oxygen gas is found only on the Earth.
  • The ozone layer in the atmosphere of the Earth protects all organisms on the Earth from harmful sun rays.

(b) Why do we see only one side of the moon always?

Ans.The moon revolves around the earth in about 27 days. It takes exactly the same time to rotate on its axis. To complete both the movements, the moon takes the same time. This is the reason why we see only one side of the moon.

(b) What is the Universe?

Ans.We see millions of millions of stars, planets, satellites, asteroids, meteoroids, forming galaxies. Innumerable galaxies form the universe. In other words, we can say that all these celestial bodies form the universe.
